Carr Hardware acquires another local company, Lee Hardware

LEE – In an acquisition that unites two families of long-standing Berkshire hardware stores, Bodywork Hardware purchases Lee Hardware. Strengthening its footprint in Lee, Carr plans to complete its acquisition of Lee Hardware on September 27.

Carr will continue to operate under the Lee Hardware True Value name with no downtime. In business since the 1940s, Joey Scapin has owned and managed the store since 1991 and will stay on to ensure a smooth transition.

The store will retain management, store staff and shoppers will always find their favorite brands. Down the street, Carr Hardware will also continue to operate a sister location. With plans to increase and differentiate products at the two hardware stores, customers will have a wider range of buying opportunities.

Carr Hardware & Supply Company, Inc. was founded in 1928 by Sam Carr. In 1962, the Raser family bought the business and continues to operate it today. Carr operates stores in Pittsfield, Lee, Lenox, Great Barrington, North Adams and Springfield in Massachusetts and Avon and Enfield in Connecticut. Carr Hardware was named 2017 National Independent Small Business of the Year; National LED Retailer of the Year in 2016; featured on CBS’s “Undercover Boss”; and was voted Best of the Berkshires 23 years in a row.

Berkshire Bounty appoints new board of directors

GREATER BARRINGTONBerkshire premium co-directors Mark Lefenfeld and Jay Weintraub have announced a new board of directors for the non-profit organization.

In 2017, Berkshire Bounty raised 8,000 pounds of food. With more than 100 volunteers, the organization plans to distribute more than 400,000 books this year, feeding about 3,000 people per week. This continued success has expanded the size, service and geography of Berkshire Bounty, leading to the need to strengthen its organizational structure with the formation of a formal board of individuals with experience in areas relevant to the organization.

Brian grossman is Managing Director and Brand Marketing Specialist, specializing in the development and implementation of innovative business strategies and marketing plans, content creation, research, technology platforms and media strategy. He is currently CEO and co-founder of Artistic, a technology start-up based in the Berkshires. Grossman has held executive positions at leading sports, music and consumer goods companies, including the senior vice president of marketing for the NY Knicks at Madison Square Garden. He has also held senior positions at XM Satellite Radio and General Mills. Grossman holds a BA from Harvard and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Marguerite Moulton is the Executive Director of Berkshire Grown, a local non-profit organization that supports and promotes local agriculture as part of a healthy Berkshire economy and landscape. She has a background in community development program development, photography and education. Margaret moved to the Berkshires in 2015 to work for Reservations Administrators. She holds a master’s degree in photography and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.

Marc Lefenfeld, co-director of the Berkshire Bounty, is a resident of Great Barrington. He has served on the Great Barrington finance committee and is a past chairman of Hevreh of Southern Berkshire. Lefenfeld is a retired lawyer and investment banker, and holds a BA, JD and MBA. Mark co-founded Backyard Bounty of the Berkshires, the predecessor of Berkshire Bounty, in 2015.

Morgan ovitski is the coordinator of the Be Well Berkshires project, a Mass in Motion-funded initiative that supports equitable access to healthy food and opportunities for physical activity. Through this work, Ovitsky facilitates the Berkshire County Food Access Collaborative, a multi-sector collaborative platform to examine region-specific strengths and challenges in accessing local foods. She sits on committees including the Downtown Pittsfield Farmers Market Steering Committee, the Healthy Pittsfield Partnership, and the Age Friendly Task Force.

Co-director of the Berkshire Bounty Jay weintraub has lived in the Berkshires since 2001. While residing in Alford, he designed and instituted Alford-Assist, where city residents can post requests for help from their neighbors. Weintraub was also a key member of the group which planned, installed and oversaw the creation of a municipality-owned fiber optic network in Alford. Weintraub retired in 2012 after spending more than 30 years as a Wall Street research analyst at several companies, most notably leading corporate bond research at Merrill Lynch. He co-founded Backyard Bounty of the Berkshires, the predecessor organization of Berkshire Bounty, in 2015.

Berkshire Economic Recovery Project launches first cohorts of technical assistance

BERKSHIRE COUNTY 1Berkshire, in partnership with the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and with the support of the United States Economic Development Administration, announces the launch and opening of registrations for its first cycle of technical assistance cohorts to small businesses and organizations.

With five experts as technical assistance providers, this first round of seven cohorts aims to support up to 49 small businesses and organizations during the fall of 2021. Each individual cohort will be limited to seven participating businesses / organizations and will start. with a compulsory two-hour workshop. After the workshop, participants in each cohort will receive handouts to complete before receiving up to two hours of additional free one-on-one technical support from our expert resource providers.

Cohorts provided for fall 2021 include:

  • From October 6: Prepare to Get Funded, with Robin Helfand
  • From October 13: Employee engagement and retention, with Karen Carswell and Lucy Steinert
  • From October 20: Digital Marketing Essentials, with Francesca Olsen
  • From October 28: don’t just get up, stand out! with Carolyn Blitz * non-profit organizations only *
  • From November 4: Prepare to Get Funded, with Robin Helfand
  • From November 10: Employee engagement and retention, with Karen Carswell and Lucy Steinert
  • From December 1: Essentials of Digital Marketing, with Francesca Olsen

These technical assistance workshops are completely free for participating companies and organizations, but registration is considered a commitment to participate in the entire process, from initiation to independent preparation work, including direct technical assistance. and follow-up evaluation. Berkshire Community College selected for Project Vision

PITTSFIELDBerkshire Community College (BCC) is one of 13 nationally selected two-year community colleges for Project vision, a program supported by the Advanced Technological Education program of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The aim of Project Vision is to catalyze grant proposal submissions seeking funding from the Department of Undergraduate Studies (DUE) for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) projects.

“Being chosen for Project Vision represents an important opportunity for BCC. The expertise provided to us through this program will increase our chances of securing significant funding for exciting projects in the STEM field, ”said Kierstyn Hunter, PhD, vice president of academic affairs at BCC. “We see this as an important springboard from which we can develop our STEM program. “

Project Vision is specially designed to assist rural two-year colleges or colleges with new presidents. Subject matter experts work with local faculty and staff to create a comfort level in grant writing and researching growth opportunities, thus increasing the likelihood of securing large grants from NSF.

Project Vision’s mission is to:

  • Provide rural two-year colleges and / or colleges with new presidents with the expertise to generate innovative ideas that produce award-worthy NSF proposals
  • Provide support at all levels of a college ecosystem, including the board of directors, president, administrators, faculty and staff
  • Offer professional development activities that encompass the merits of the NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program and other DUE programs
  • Provide each college with the necessary support to build its capacity and regularly submit proposals to the ATE program and other DUE programs
  • Leading this initiative by a seasoned team of ATE experts, past college president / CEO, senior college administrators and former NSF program officers who help each college promote excellence in STEM education for all the students

Barbieri Joins Greylock as Vice President and Director of Corporate Banking Services

PITTSFIELDFederal Credit Union Greylock has appointed Michael Barbieri as Vice President and Director, Commercial Banking Services. He will provide leadership and coaching to a team of three lenders and lead the strategic vision and business development efforts of Greylock’s corporate banking department.

Barbieri holds a BA in Business Administration and Finance from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) and graduated with honors from America’s Community Bankers, National School of Banking at Fairfield University. He currently serves on the boards of the MCLA Foundation, the Berkshire Life Foundation and the Berkshire Housing Development Corporation.

Nicole Cuenin joins Molari Employment and Health Services

PITTSFIELD – Gail Molari, President and CEO of MOLARI Employment and Health Services recently announced the hiring of Nicole Cuenin as an accountant.

Cuenin works with the company’s CFO to manage payroll, benefits, customer invoicing, and accounts receivable. Prior to joining MOLARI, Cuenin held various positions at Adirondack Payroll for over a decade.
