(Washington, DC) – US Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), senior member of the Senate Armed Forces Committee, issued the following statement in response to the release of the Portsmouth Shipyard Economic Impact Report for 2020:

“This report reaffirms what we already know in New Hampshire: The Portsmouth Shipyard plays a vital role in our state, not only in enhancing our country’s military readiness, but also in solidly supporting our regional economies and national. said Shaheen. “Our shipyard workers are skilled and hardworking individuals who help ensure our Navy submarine fleet is ready for any mission. I am proud of the shipyard workforce, and especially given the immense challenges they faced during the pandemic – while many Granite Staters were working from home, shipyard workers made their way every day to their stations to do their work. I am grateful for all they do and for the leadership of the Portsmouth Shipyard in ensuring that projects are carried out in support of our national defense. As a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will continue to fight for measures in the Senate that invest in our shipyard and its workforce. “

Earlier this month, Shaheen joined Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro for the unveiling of the multi-mission dry dock project at Portsmouth Shipyard. Shaheen has historically obtained federal approval and funding for the multi-mission dry dock project. In the Senate Military Construction and Veterans Appropriations Subcommittee for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 funding bill, Shaheen secured these investments again, which includes $ 475 million in funding for the multi-mission dry dock project. Shaheen also recently announced that Methuen Construction of Plaistow has been awarded a federal contract to complete the Dry Dock 2 complex at the shipyard.

In addition to his leadership on the Senate Armed Forces Committee on Annual Defense Legislation, Shaheen also prioritizes other laws in the Senate in favor of Portsmouth Shipyard. This includes the U.S. Ports, Shipyards, and Repair Docks (SHIPYARD) Infrastructure Assistance Provision Act of 2021, which she introduced earlier this year with Senator Wicker (R-MS), and would provide $ 25 billion to make the investments needed to optimize, improve and rebuild shipyard facilities, electrical infrastructure, environmental systems, and equipment for public and private shipyards in the United States that support the U.S. Navy’s fleet. US Navy. Shaheen and Wicker are co-chairs of the Senate Navy Caucus.
