Statement attributable to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Sudan – on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the independence of the Sudan – Sudan

Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Volker Perthes warmly congratulates the Sudanese people on the 66th anniversary of their independence. Today, as the country faces yet another obstacle in the wake of the recent coup on October 25, the Sudanese people’s struggle for freedom and democracy continues.

In the context of the current political crisis in Sudan, SRSG Perthes welcomes all the steps taken to date to find a solution in order to restore the path of democratic transition. The SRSG believes that there is an urgent need to address the lack of trust between all parties in order to find common ground for a mutually agreed way out of the current crisis. In this context, the use of violence against peaceful protesters, attacks on journalists and violations of press freedom and other violations of basic human rights do not help to create an environment conducive to the reestablishment of peace. peaceful democratic way in Sudan. These violations must end and must be the subject of credible and thorough investigations in order to bring the perpetrators to justice. The SRSG urges the authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly and to allow demonstrators who adhere to non-violence to express themselves freely. Non-violence was a key principle behind the victory of the Sudanese revolution and it continues to be supported by almost all Sudanese who courageously take to the streets to voice their demands.

The United Nations remains committed to helping the Sudanese people achieve their aspirations for a democratic and stable Sudan. The great slogans of the Sudanese revolution (freedom, peace and justice) once inspired the world, and the current resistance to non-violence of the Sudanese people once again inspires all the peace-loving people of the world. We continue to closely monitor the situation and cooperate to help establish the just and peaceful society that the Sudanese people deserve.

To all the people of Sudan, happy 66th anniversary of independence.
